SHIATSU -
DEFINITION
ACCESS TO THE BODY'S HEALING MECHANISMS SHIATSU originated in Japan as a "by-product" of other ancient Chinese systems that had been imported in Japan. Nowadays apart from being offered as a therapy to the General Public in Japan, it is particularly offered as the main therapy for maintaning the health of the Japanese Emperor. It also enjoys an increasing reputation in the West too.
In ancient times, people used to divide the therapeutic systems
into three
categories: So, SHIATSU has been one of the handful of healing arts that has preserved its superior quality since antiquity. Of course it would be unwise to say that the only therapeutic techniques that should be practiced must be the ones of superior category. Even if a technique offers curing effects only, then that alone is a great achievement. Most people would really like to know the exact western word that stands for SHIATSU. The issue not just for SHIATSU but in general for most asian languages is that you can't translate exactly into any western language. The reason is that in each asian word there are multiple meanings. Of course it would be nice at least to hang on from somewhere, however this could either lead us to really understand a word or to really get into the wrong way. Unfortunately this is what had happened to those who tried to translate SHIATSU merely as finger pressure. Because of that they administered the wrong type of techniques and therefore they perceived SHIATSU as a massage technique. The same thing can happen to anyone who merely perceives a human being as an animal only! It is ideed too complex to define SHIATSU as that would be the case if we wanted to define Life, Human beings, etc. However we will try to explain in simple terms how it works. We have stated that SHIATSU IS AN INTERNAL HEALING ART. In the Orient there are also external healing arts. The same happens with martial arts whereby they are also divided into external and internal fighting systems. The difference between the two systems is that the external systems use muscular strength, whereas the internal ones use the power of KI to cure or fight. The actions performed by an external art can be seen/ perceived by the eye, whereas the actions performed by an internal art cannot. Dealing with internal arts we virtually deal with the world of KI; one that can not be seen with bare eyes, e.g. we often see in internal martial art demonstrations men and women having the ability to break bricks with their punch. In these cases the bricks are not broken by the muscular strength of the hand. What is actually done is that KI is directed through the hand to break the bricks and of course to protect the hand. Externally we see the hand punching but internally we are not able to see KI. So, the hand is used as a medium to break the bricks. The same happens with SHIATSU, of course in this case we cure rather than destroy. There are external movements applied by the hands but what is important, are the INTERNAL MOVEMENTS which cannot be seen. So, if somebody tries to imitate the external movements only without applying the basic internal principles the result will be massage instead of SHIATSU. Feeling KI is not a charismatic act. It is rather an ability that comes through special training. It can be accessed by anyone. Only those that felt the KI were the ones to gain authentic insight of what SHIATSU really is. This feeling again cannot be described in exact words. However it is an enjoyable and relaxing one. Therefore SHIATSU THERAPY is an art that paves the way for the power of KI in order to maintain health, cure and prevent various diseases.
THE TREATMENT The object of the treatment is to set into operation the normal flow of our inner healing mechanisms/qualities.These inner-drugs that are inherent in every human being, had been given the name "KI" in Japanese or "CHI" in Chinese. This flow can only be achieved by inducing a relaxation response to the nervous system and by allowing the breathing pattern to expand to the last inch of the human body. Under these basic principles we can have movement of KI. Of course, this thing again can only be attained by using the special touching techniques that are unique to SHIATSU. The various imbalances that do happen in our bodies, both on emotional and physical level are due to obstructions in the flow of KI. An average treatment ideally lasts about an hour. Before the session a detailed analysis of the medical history of the patient /receiver is taken first. After that the session begins. SHIATSU is always done on the floor on a special mattress. Working on the floor enables the practitioner to employ one million kinds of movements/ techniques, a fact that would be impossible if SHIATSU was done on a table. SHIATSU is applied to specific areas that have direct access to the body's KI. The practitioner is aiming to influence the parts that are most hyper-active and hypo-active in KI. The result that we want to offer is not a situation where everything will be at the same level. We rather want to make every part enjoying the flexibility to be either hyper-active or hypo-active when that is needed from the body. So what we are treating are parts that are stuck/unchanged in the same pattern all the time. For a variety of serious reasons SHIATSU is done with CLOTHES ON. For best results the receiver should be wearing loose clothing. It is also recommended not to eat anything heavy before the treatment. Even a few hours after the treatment the receiver should take a rest in a quiet place, in order to benefit more.
